Countryballs-inspired conquest sim

Polandball: Not Safe For World is a free-to-play action game from Sunny Chow. This casual war simulator is based on countryballs, an internet meme where the characters are ball-like entities with flags of different countries on them. At the center of the game is Polandball, which you control as you navigate the Earth looking for countries with problems. You beat those countryballs up until the problem is gone.

Filled with internet references and obscure humor, Polandball: Not Safe For World caters to history buffs and casual players alike. This approach makes up for the oversimplified visual style in the game.

Create a peaceful world, with violence

Polandball: Not Safe For World features a visual style and gameplay that can be loosely compared to Worms W.M.D.: Mobilize. Its premise revolves around countryballs, an internet phenomenon that spawned from the original Polandball. It has become a platform for tackling historical, cultural, and international relations issues. The game also retains the stereotypical representation of certain countries, such as the U.K. with its tea and top hat.

As the superior Polandball, America the World Police enlists your help in restoring world order. You drag and slide to rotate a cartoon Earth and find conflict. Once you see countries having conflicts or issues, you move into their location and attack them with a wide range of weapons. From weather storms to nuclear strikes, you beat those nations into submission.

The entire game is rendered in a crudely drawn art style reminiscent of the original comics. Uneven lines and plain colors populate this app, which feels right at home for fans of the franchise but can appear underwhelming for others. Additionally, there are a lot of obscure references that will fly above most people’s heads, plus certain materials that will come across as culturally insensitive to some.

Fun, casual, but borderline offensive

Depending on where you stand, Polandball: Not Safe For World can be a fun, humor-filled casual game or a politically incorrect piece of entertainment. Its commitment to the original internet phenomenon is visible in the unrefined art style and most of its content. By offering a straightforward gameplay premise, it’s a game anyone can hop into immediately, with a very relaxed learning curve. Still, it’s a definite must-try.

PROS

  • Retains the original countryballs art style
  • Fun and casual gameplay

CONS

  • Contains stereotypical depictions of countries
  • Some jokes are too obscure for casual players
